A straight answer about the climb: distance, gradient, time on foot and why fitness matters less than acclimatisation.
The trail from Phulawasipata (4,650m) to the Vinicunca viewpoint (5,090m) is wide, clear and climbs about 440m over roughly an hour and a half at the pace our guides set. There is no scrambling, no exposure and no section where you need your hands. On paper it is an easy walk.
The caveat is the air. At 5,090m you breathe roughly half the oxygen available at sea level, and that turns a gentle slope into hard work. This is why fitness at home predicts very little, and why the travellers who do best are those who spent two or more days in Cusco first and who walk slowly from the very first step.

💡 Note: the quad routes reach the same viewpoint with far less effort. See the full comparison of the four plans.
Two days in Cusco is the minimum we recommend, three is better. This matters more than anything else on the list.
The commonest mistake is starting fast. Set a pace you could hold while talking, and keep it the whole way.
If you have walked above 4,000m before, you know how your body reacts. If not, assume you will be slower than usual.
If more than one line on the right applies, the quad tour is the better day out.
The first twenty minutes feel easy, which is the trap. Then the trail tilts and you notice your breathing. Most people settle into a rhythm of twenty or thirty steps and a pause, and that is completely normal at this altitude — the guide walks at that pace on purpose. The last ten minutes before the viewpoint are the steepest of the day, and then the ridge opens up in front of you.
Tell the guide early rather than pushing on quietly. There is an oxygen tank in the vehicle, saddle horses on the trail, and no obligation to continue. Our altitude guide covers the symptoms worth reporting.
Children who walk well often manage better than their parents, because they go slowly by nature. Steep descents are harder on knees than the climb, so trekking poles — included on both hiking plans — make a real difference on the way down. For anyone who would rather not risk it, the quad exists for exactly this reason.
Hiking from US$29 with trekking poles and oxygen on board — or the quad from US$70.
The same three things we ask on WhatsApp before recommending a plan. Nothing is sent anywhere — the answer appears right here.
