The two most booked full day tours from Cusco — a painted mountain at 5,090m and a turquoise glacial lake at 4,200m. Here's how they really compare.
These are the two classic day hikes from Cusco, and most travellers with a short trip end up choosing between them. Both are full-day guided tours that leave the city before dawn, both include tourist transport, breakfast, a buffet lunch, a professional guide and trekking poles, and both finish back in Cusco in the afternoon. What changes is what you walk to. The Rainbow Mountain tour takes you south to Vinicunca, a mineral-striped ridge at 5,090m in the Vilcanota range, facing the Ausangate glacier. The Humantay Lake tour goes west to Mollepata, where a shorter but steep climb ends at a turquoise glacial lake at around 4,200m, below the Salkantay snowpeak. Rainbow Mountain is higher, longer and more demanding; Humantay is closer to Cusco, nearly 900m lower and easier on the lungs.

💡 Note: entrance tickets are not included in either base price. On Rainbow Mountain the Vinicunca ticket can be added in the booking form or paid on site, and the Red Valley fee is always paid on site to the community. See our entrance fee guide for details.
Pickup is between 04:20 and 04:40 at your hotel or Airbnb in downtown Cusco, followed by the drive south to Cusipata for breakfast at Chirihuani. From the Phulawasipata trailhead at 4,650m, the guided walk to the Vinicunca viewpoint takes about an hour and a half. The trail itself is wide and clear — the difficulty is the thin air at 5,090m, not the terrain. After time at the top for photos and the guide's explanation, you walk back down, have a buffet lunch in Cusipata and return to Cusco around 16:30. Travellers with a good fitness level can add the optional Red Valley detour on the descent.
Rainbow Mountain is a good fit if you:
The Humantay Lake tour leaves Cusco just as early and drives west towards Mollepata, in the Apurímac valley, with breakfast on the way. From Soraypampa the climb to the lake is shorter than Vinicunca but noticeably steeper, taking around an hour to an hour and a half on a switchback trail. The reward is a glacial lake in an intense turquoise, fed by the ice of the Humantay and Salkantay peaks — the same landscape the Salkantay trek crosses on its first day. The tour includes tourist transport, breakfast, buffet lunch, a professional guide and trekking poles, and returns to Cusco in the afternoon.
Humantay Lake is a good fit if you:
Altitude is the real difference. Humantay tops out around 4,200m, which is close to what your body already handles in Cusco, while Vinicunca takes you almost 900m higher, to 5,090m — high enough that acclimatisation matters more than fitness. The walk to Humantay is shorter but steeper; the walk to Vinicunca is longer and gentler, but every step is in thinner air. If you have time for only one and you have just landed, Humantay is the safer first day. If you have already spent a few days in Cusco, Rainbow Mountain is the one people come back talking about.
Both tours start from US$29 per person and carry the same inclusions: tourist transport, breakfast, buffet lunch, a professional English–Spanish guide and trekking poles. The difference in cost appears only afterwards, in the entrance tickets and the optional extras. See the full Rainbow Mountain price breakdown for what is and isn't inside the base price.
Yes, and it's the most common plan for travellers with four or more days in Cusco. The usual order is Humantay first, as a gentler introduction to altitude, then Rainbow Mountain a day or two later. We'd avoid booking them back to back: both start before 5 AM and involve several hours of walking at height, so leaving a rest day between them makes the second one far more enjoyable.
Vinicunca at 5,090m is higher than anything most travellers have experienced, so we recommend at least two days in Cusco before going. Our vehicles carry an oxygen tank and a first aid kit, and local families offer saddle horses along the trail, arranged directly with them on site. See our altitude guide for practical advice on preparing for the day.
Both tours from $29 per person — pickup in downtown Cusco, breakfast, buffet lunch, professional guide and trekking poles included.
