The same full day tour and the same price: you walk the crimson Red Valley on your own first, then meet the guide and the group at Vinicunca.
The Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley plan is the same day as our Classic tour — same pickup, same breakfast in Cusipata, same buffet lunch — with one change on the trail: instead of following the group straight up to Vinicunca, you take the path into the Red Valley first, on your own, and meet the guide and the group at the 5,090m viewpoint afterwards. It costs the same US$29, because the extension isn't a service we sell you: it's a trail you walk yourself, with an entrance fee paid directly to the community that looks after it.
The Red Valley is an optional, self-guided extension. Here is exactly how it works on the day.
Your guide points out the route and where the group will wait at Vinicunca, but does not walk the Red Valley with you.
Plan for roughly one more hour of walking than the classic route, all of it above 4,900m.
Only worth doing if you are a confident walker at altitude. If you are unsure, take the classic route with the group.
Great choice — the same day and the same departure, with the crimson basin walked on your own before joining the group at Vinicunca. Here is what each route gives you.
You walk the Red Valley on your own first, then meet the guide and the group at Vinicunca for the rest of the day.
The classic route with the group the whole way: up to the viewpoint and back down the same trail, at the same price.
Both are hiking tours on the same departure — the Red Valley is decided on the trail, not at checkout.
