5,090m is higher than anything most travellers have stood on. How to prepare, what the tour carries, and what to do if the altitude catches up with you.
At the Vinicunca viewpoint there is roughly half the oxygen available at sea level, and noticeably less than in Cusco, which already sits at 3,350m. That is why fit travellers who run half marathons at home find themselves stopping every twenty steps: this is not a fitness test, it is an adaptation test. The good news is that the adaptation is straightforward and predictable. Spend at least two days in Cusco before the tour, walk slowly from the first step, drink more water than feels necessary, and the vast majority of people reach the top comfortably.
| Point | Altitude | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cusco | 3,350m (10,990 ft) | Where you acclimatise before the tour |
| Cusipata | 3,310m (10,859 ft) | Breakfast — slightly lower than Cusco |
| Phulawasipata | 4,650m (15,256 ft) | Trailhead, reached by road |
| Kayrahuire Alto | 4,450m (14,600 ft) | Quad base on the ATV plan |
| Vinicunca viewpoint | 5,090m (16,700 ft) | The highest point of the day |
| Red Valley | above 4,900m | Self-guided leg of the route |
| Ausangate | 6,384m (20,945 ft) | Seen, not climbed |

💡 Note: the ascent on foot is 440m from the trailhead to the viewpoint. It is the altitude of those 440m, not the distance, that makes the walk demanding.
Arrive in Cusco at least two days before, and keep the first day gentle. Three days is better if your trip allows.
The commonest mistake is a fast first ten minutes. Set a pace you could hold while talking, and keep it.
Drink more than you think you need, try coca tea, and keep breakfast light rather than heavy.
The classic hiking profile: 440m of ascent on foot between 4,650m and 5,090m.
Travelling with a heart or breathing condition? Speak to your doctor before booking, and tell us in advance.
Mild soroche shows up as headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness or poor sleep. It is common and usually manageable. Tell your guide as soon as you notice it rather than pushing on quietly — there is oxygen on board, and turning back early is a normal, sensible outcome that costs you nothing but the summit.
Serious altitude illness is rare on a day trip, because you descend within hours. The warning signs to report immediately are confusion, an inability to walk in a straight line, or breathlessness that does not improve at rest.
Local families offer saddle horses along the trail, arranged directly with them on site and paid in cash. They cover most of the ascent, though the last stretch to the viewpoint is always on foot. If even that is too much, the ATV tour reaches the same place with a 3 to 5 minute walk.
That is a question for your doctor, not for a tour operator. Some travellers take acetazolamide preventively; others manage with acclimatisation alone. What we can say is that no tablet replaces the two days in Cusco.
