The Day in Summary

In short: Same day as the classic route, but from Phulawasipata you walk the Red Valley on your own, paying the community fee at the gate, then meet the guide and the group at the Vinicunca viewpoint. It adds about one hour of walking.

The pickup, the breakfast in Cusipata and the arrival at the Phulawasipata trailhead are identical to the Classic itinerary. The difference starts at the trail: instead of walking up with the group, you take the path into the Red Valley on your own, pay the community entrance fee at the gate, and cross the basin at your own pace. You then meet the guide and the group at the Vinicunca viewpoint, at 5,090m, and the rest of the day — the explanation, the photographs, the walk down and the buffet lunch — happens together.

Itinerary FAQ

Red Valley Questions

At the Phulawasipata trailhead. The guide points out the Red Valley path before the group sets off, and tells you where and when to meet them at Vinicunca.
No. The Red Valley leg is self-guided: the guide stays with the main group and meets you again at the Vinicunca viewpoint.
It is charged by the community that manages the valley and paid on site, in cash, on the day. It is not part of the tour price.
Roughly one extra hour of walking compared with the classic route, all of it above 4,900m. The rest of the day, including lunch and the return to Cusco, stays the same.
Anyone unsure about walking alone at altitude, anyone with breathing difficulties, and anyone who arrived in Cusco within the last day or two.
