Month by month: when the colours are clearest, when it rains, when it is coldest and when the viewpoint is at its busiest.
In short: The dry season, from May to September, gives the clearest skies and sharpest colours, with freezing dawns and more visitors. From December to March, rain, cloud and occasional snow can hide the stripes, but the trail is far quieter.
Rainbow Mountain can be visited all year, but the odds of a good day are not the same in every month. The dry season, roughly May to September, brings clear mornings, firm trails and the sharpest colours — at the cost of freezing starts and the biggest crowds. The rainy season, December to March, brings soft light, green pastures and far fewer people, but also cloud, mud and the real possibility that fresh snow hides the stripes for the day. April, October and November sit in between and are, for many travellers, the sweet spot.
| Period | Weather | Colours | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| April | Rain easing, green slopes | Good | Moderate |
| May – June | Dry, very cold at dawn | Excellent | Building |
| July – August | Driest and coldest, clear skies | Excellent | Highest |
| September | Dry, slightly milder | Excellent | Moderate |
| October – November | First rains, mixed days | Good | Lower |
| December – March | Rain, cloud, occasional snow | Variable | Lowest |

💡 Note: whatever the month, the mountain is at 5,090m: cold, wind and strong sun can all happen on the same morning. See what to bring.
Clear skies and the sharpest colours, but freezing dawns and the busiest viewpoint. Book ahead in June and July.
Green pastures, dramatic skies and almost no crowds, but a real chance of cloud or snow covering the stripes.
The compromise most travellers prefer: decent odds on the weather without the peak-season queues.
Two groups can visit on the same date and come away with completely different impressions. Mid-morning is the window: the sun is high enough to reach into the folds of the slope, the light is still angled enough to give the stripes definition, and the largest groups have not yet arrived. By early afternoon the light flattens and the platform is at its busiest. Our early departures are built around that, and the ATV plan has a 03:20 option for photographers.
Fresh snow covers the colours completely, sometimes for a day or two until it melts off. It is most likely between December and March but can happen in any month. The tour still runs — a snow-covered Vinicunca with the Ausangate behind it is its own kind of spectacular — but if the stripes are the whole point of your trip, weight your dates towards the dry season.
June to August fills early, especially around Inti Raymi in late June and the national holidays at the end of July. We recommend booking at least 48 hours ahead year-round, and a good deal further in those weeks. See how to book.
