Vinicunca lies in the Vilcanota range, three hours south of Cusco in the district of Pitumarca. Its mineral stripes were revealed as the ice retreated, and today it is the most photographed mountain in Peru after Machu Picchu.
The striped ridge at 5,090m, with time to photograph it and hear the guide's explanation.
A deep crimson valley behind the mountain, reached on a self-guided detour with its own community fee.
The most sacred apu of the region at 6,384m, dominating the skyline from the viewpoint.
Llamas, alpacas and herding families in traditional dress along the whole route.
On the ATV tour, 50 minutes to an hour of riding from Kayrahuire Alto at 4,450m and back.
Rainbow Mountain isn't the only full day option from Cusco. These two guides lay out the real differences.
5,090m of colour against a turquoise glacial lake at 4,200m — altitude, walking time and which to do first.

Hiking from US$29 · quad from US$70, or US$75 with the Red Valley — pickup, guide, breakfast and lunch already included.
The hiking tours leave once a day, early. The ATV tour runs on four departures so you can sleep in if you prefer.
The single hiking departure, for both the Classic and the Red Valley plan. Pickup at your hotel or Airbnb in downtown Cusco, with the exact time set by your location.
The two early ATV departures, with hotel pickup in downtown Cusco and breakfast in Cusipata. Best light at the mountain and the quietest viewpoint.
The mid-morning ATV departure, also with hotel pickup in downtown Cusco and breakfast included — a gentler start to the day.
The latest ATV departure. It does not include breakfast, so have it at your hotel, and the meeting point is the fountain at Plaza de Regocijo rather than your hotel.
Join small groups with expert guides — hike the classic route from $29 per person, or ride a quad to the top of the colours.
