What the ride actually feels like at 4,450m: the briefing, the terrain, how fast you really go, who should not ride and what the two routes change.
Two quad plans run daily. The Classic goes to Rainbow Mountain and leaves only a 3 to 5 minute walk. The Complete rides 30 minutes up to the Red Valley viewpoint and adds a 25 to 30 minute walk across to Vinicunca, so you see both landscapes in one day.
The ATV tour exists for a simple reason: not everybody can, or wants to, climb for an hour and a half at 5,000m. The quads start from Kayrahuire Alto at 4,450m, where the guides give riding instructions and there is time to practise on flat ground. From there the ride takes 50 minutes to an hour there and back, following a track through open high-altitude pasture with the Ausangate glacier at 6,384m on the horizon. The quads are parked near the mountain and a walk of 3 to 5 minutes brings you to the main viewpoint, with around 40 minutes there.
Both cost exactly the same. First-timers should take the automatic and use the practice time at the base.
A scenic ride rather than a race. The group stays together and the guides set the pace.
Only 3 to 5 minutes on foot at the end, which is why this is the plan for travellers wary of the climb.

You exert yourself far less, which makes a real difference if you have only just arrived in Cusco. But the viewpoint is still at 5,090m, so take the short walk slowly and expect to feel the air. The vehicle carries an oxygen tank and the guide travels with the group throughout.
Travellers with knee problems, families with children who would not manage the climb, anyone short on acclimatisation days, and anyone who simply likes the idea of riding through the Andes. If you are a confident walker and want the full experience, the hiking tour is both cheaper and, in our view, more memorable. See the full comparison.
